The Association of Black American Ambassadors (ABAA) is dismayed by the unjust and politically motivated dismissal of General Charles Q. Brown as Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. General Brown, a highly decorated officer with over three decades of outstanding service, has demonstrated unparalleled leadership, strategic vision, and commitment to our national security.
General Brown’s dismissal represents a break from nonpartisan leadership and undermines the principles of stability, continuity, and meritocracy that are essential to our nation’s defense institutions. It raises concerns about political interference in the chain of command and the erosion of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the highest ranks of government service.
As the second African American Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Brown’s appointment symbolized progress toward a more representative military leadership. His firing during Black History Month, when we are celebrating the contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen, the 6888 women, the Montford Point Marines, General Powell and too many others too numerous to mention, sends a chilling message to African American service members and threatens to reverse the hard-fought gains made in ensuring that the armed forces reflect the diversity and strength of America.
We are in solidarity with General Brown and all service members who have dedicated their lives to America’s defense. We call on the administration to provide transparency on the reasoning behind this decision and to reaffirm its commitment to an apolitical, professional military leadership.
We urge Congress, military officials, Foreign Service Officers and our fellow Americans to remain vigilant against any actions that threaten the integrity of our armed forces and the principles of equal opportunity. General Brown’s removal without just cause, is a disservice to America and a stain on our values.
